upcoming auditions

This November, Centre Stage Community Theatre is proud to present the comedy "More Than Meets The Eye" and all performers 13 years old and older are encouraged to audition. We are dedicated to race-blind, gender-blind, and age-blind casting. We want to cast the best possible performers and will adapt the characters to suit the performers selected to join the show.

In this play written by Fred Carmichael, Stanley Nichols is an author of successful children's books under the pen name of Grandma Letty. To his dismay, the non-existent Grandma Letty is voted Grandmother of the Year. Stanley’s house is beset and besieged by reporters and photographers. Afraid that being exposed as the writer of children’s books will jeopardize his reputation as a great American novelist and philosopher, Stanley has to produce Grandma Letty. Mistaken identities and hi-jinks ensue.

The show will be directed by Rachael Patten and be performed November 18, 19, and 20 at a venue to be announced soon.

Auditions will be held at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Corning,
1 E 1st Street, Corning NY
at the following dates and times:
Thursday, August 11, 6:30-8:30 PM
Friday, August 12, 6:30-8:30 PM
Saturday, August 13, 10 AM -12 Noon
With possible callbacks scheduled for Sunday, August 14

Please prepare a joke for auditions.
There will also be readings from the script
and light movement (street clothes are ok).

CHARACTER OVERVIEWS

(Again, we want to stress that we will adapt the characters to suit our cast...)

Stanley Nichols: A pleasant and happy individual, although excitable in a crisis. When the play opens, they are tired from working hard on their great American novel and is slightly disheveled and distracted. They panic when they are about to be unmasked as the author behind the pen name “Grandma Letty.”

Christine Nichols: Although they seem calm to most observers, they have been living a lie for many years and the toll on their patience is beginning to show. They are very much in love with Stanley and has made him a good partner but, in a showdown, puts their ideals above their husband.

Peggy: A teenager/young adult who is quite normal, a little too normal they are afraid. They are an adolescent growing into young adulthood who, at the moment, is still slightly angular. Adopted child to Stanley and Christine.

Cyril B Hoskins: A publisher of tremendous vitality. Their prime interest in life is the profitability of their publishing firm of Hoskins & Company. At times, they are sentimental but never loses sight of business for an instant.

Nora: A neighbor; they have a good sense of humor that borders on the wry and sarcastic. They are a considered good friend by the Nichols in spite of the fact that Nora drops by unannounced several times a day.

Bradley: A teenager/young adult of Peggy’s age; they are extremely intelligent without being obnoxiously so. Their genial nature can be hidden behind their serious expression and the glasses they wear.

Prudence Harper: A sophisticated reporter for Life magazine; they are used to barging in where they are not wanted and getting the most out of any situation.

Carl Henderson: A photographer for Life magazine; they are never without their camera. They are the kind of person who doesn’t speak unless it is important. They are not dumb but possibly a little slow to catch onto situations and conversations.

Miss Jenkins: the kind of person who takes their job too seriously and forges ahead regardless of the problems that stand in their way.

Maude: housekeeper and cook for Chris’ family for many years. They have tremendous loyalty to Chris. They don’t understand Stanley and don't have much patience with him. They are gruff, sometimes curt, but tries very hard to please.

Lawton Ellerbe: is a person a great deal like Hoskins, of the same temperament
